Something you should know about me is that I love food. I enjoy trying new recipes and searching high and low for places that serve only the best, most delicious food. I’m pretty sure you guys love food just as much as me. Don’t deny it!
However, what makes my relationship with food a “love/hate” relationship is the trouble food can do to one’s complexion. For example, I eat something that not only looked like it was worthy of an Instagram post, but tasted like it was created by angels from the heavens. Later on, I wake up to find my face breaking out with one or two pimples. Why does something sooo good have to be so bad for me? I did not ask for such a burden on my face at any point of the day. Cursed be to whatever wreaked havoc on my skin. Darn!
Like every problem, it can be fixed. In this case, it would have to be finding foods that can do good, rather than harm, to your skin. If you are one who has trouble finding such foods or just too lazy, here are a list of foods that I love will help your skin be healthy once again. Bye bye, skin damage.
10. Olive Oil
Olive has been used for over many centuries. It has been a staple in both the food and beauty industry, and it’s not hard to see why. Olive oil contains vitamins E and A, as well as minerals and fatty acids. Its effects on aging skin were also reported in a study conducted by researchers in PLOS ONE:
When researchers in a 2012 study in PLOS ONE analyzed the diets of 1264 women, they found that a higher consumption of olive oil (more than 8.4 grams or 2 teaspoons a day) was associated with 31% fewer signs of aging compared to people who ate less than 3.8 grams (about 1 teaspoon).
There are many ways as to how you can apply it to your daily beauty routine or into your foods. You can drizzle it on top of your salad, on top of asparagus or carrots before roasting them in the oven, mix it with balsamic vinegar for dipping bread, and many more. Honestly there are endless possibilities with this food for cooking. I also use olive oil to remove makeup, to moisturize my skin before hopping into the shower, or I would mix it with sugar to make an exfoliating scrub for my lips.
9. Green Tea
Green tea is another popular food that has been used for centuries. In the past, it was used to treat headaches and depression, but now it is used to improve overall health. Here is an explanation from Jeffrey Morrison, MD, a nutrition consultant in New York City, as to why green tea is a skin-saving must-have:
It’s very high in antioxidants, particularly one named EGCG, which is proved to reduce redness.
Not only does green tea contain antioxidants, it also contains enzymes, amino acids, vitamin B, potassium, magnesium, and caffeine. It’s a little green miracle!
I usually combine green tea with my dessert. So, you can sprinkle this on top of your ice cream, use it as an ingredient when making a batch of cookies, or mix it with white chocolate for flavor. You can also buy green tea desserts or snacks in your nearby grocery store if you don’t have the time to make your own. If you’re just not a sweets person, then just brew your green tea and drink it hot or cold.
Green tea can be used on its own to bring out its skin-saving powers. I put brewed green tea leaves on my face and neck. Sometimes I just use the mixture as a target treatment by putting it on my pimples or areas on my face where there is redness. I also mix brewed green tea leaves it with yogurt and turmeric to make a face mask. The tea can be used as a toner, as well! I also love to put the brewed tea leave bags under my eyes to make me look refreshed and awake. If you haven’t noticed, I am a big fan of green tea.
