Here are the 5 important things to think about before dyeing your hair rainbow colors.
5. It’s pretty high maintenance.
Your strands will take a bit of a beating, so it’s important to care for them properly. When I dyed my hair purple, I had to run straight to my local Target and grab purple conditioner, a hair mask, and even leave-in conditioner. That was probably an additional $40 -$50 drop right there!
I did not anticipate having to buy extra supplies when I spent so much on dyeing my dark black hair to purple. Plus, going back to the salon to maintain your roots can hurt your wallet!
If you want colored hair for a short stint (about 2-4 weeks) without much maintenance hassle, I suggest getting a semi-permanent hair color dye that’s well-loved by many like the Unicorn Hair Tints from Lime Crime. They have a wide assortment of hair color options available that can spruce up your hair regardless of its color.

4. It fades fast.
Say goodbye to quick, five-minute showers. You’re going to be spending a little extra time maintaining your new color … and this goes regardless of what hair color you choose! My first couple showers after dying my hair red, I noticed so much dye going down the drain. Goodbye Ariel vibes, and hello to a orange, brassy hair blob!
For a hair color change that can be so drastic, it’s best you prepare for the idea that your hair needs a lot of love (and money) for it to stay as gorgeous as when you first stepped out of the salon. Do your best to wash your hair minimally, so maybe every 2-3 days compared to 1-2 days. Dry shampoo will just have to be your best friend during this phase.
When you do wash your hair, make sure to incorporate a hair color conditioner like Lime Crime’s Unicorn Hair Color Conditioner, which has helped many women keep their colored hair magical when it needs a pigment boost.
3. It’s possible to do it at home — to an extent.
You can definitely save money by keeping it up at home if you know you have very little to dye. For example, just dying the ends of your hair. Been there, done that. I even have my extra pack of hair dye in my bathroom cabinet just in case.
If you’re dying your entire head, however, splurge on the salon every once in a while! Scrolling through Pinterest and Instagram for hair color inspiration sets your hair expectations super high. Might as well make sure those high standards are met by going to a hair stylist or professional that has gone through years of training and certification.
If you dye all of your hair by yourself, especially with no dyeing experience, it will be so easy to become a hair nightmare. Treat yourself to a hair dye job that is WORTH it.
2. Your skin tone helps you choose what color to try.
Dying your hair an out-of-this-world color is a very hard choice to make. There have been times where I didn’t choose my hair color until I sat in the salon chair!
Your skin tone can guide you with finding the perfect hair color that accentuates your looks. Think about your skin’s undertones and shade (even your eye color is another possible consideration) so that you are able to choose a color that you will be happy with for a long period of time.
Then again, you can always ask your hair stylist for their opinion as well if are a very indecisive hair dye lover like myself.
1. You have to have blonde hair to make the color show up.
For major results, you’ll want to bleach first. The amount of bleach used really depends on your hair color and your desired hair length. Transforming my long black hair to purple required 4 layers of bleach, which meant a 2 hour wait time and LOTS of reapplying to my foiled up strands. Are you willing to sit in a chair for that long?
Going through the hair dying process may not always be for everyone. Maybe semi-permanent options are the best route for you. There’s hair color chalks, sprays, gels, and even dye conditioners/shampoos like the Unicorn Hair Conditioners that I mentioned earlier from Lime Crime.
You really have to think twice about dyeing your hair rainbow colors. You must have major hair-envy after looking at all of those influencers and Kpop stars with their gorgeous hair. However, dyeing your hair can be a major change in your day-to-day routine.
All in all, the most important part of this hair journey is your happiness! Make sure that you are making a hair color decision that you are 100% in love with. If you aren’t happy, then that dye job will never be worth it in the end. Happy hair dyeing, Stylista!
