A new year calls for a new start. Changing your lifestyle, daily routine, and habits, are definitely a good ways to begin the year. The great thing about New Years is that it encourages us to step out of our shell and open ourselves to new ideas and opportunities.
If I had to tell you how many times I planned to clean my closet, it would give me a good few minutes to give you an exact number. I can never get around to sorting through my clothes and belongings because I’ve gotten busier nowadays. I bet this is something you can heavily relate to, right?
Well, closet clutterers, fear not! Thanks to our pop culture, vintage style is back in style. We can pull out those clothes from the past and bring it back to our day-to-day style. No need to throw precious clothes away. I am serious!
Now, without further ado, here are some fashion trends that have made a comeback. Whether you like them or not, they are becoming popular once more.
10. Berets
Berets have existed for a long period of time, as in all the way to the Bronze Age! It is a pretty classic item because it can be worn in different ways. You can wear it at the back of the head, plopped on top, pulled down, diagonally, or even over your eyes. There is no wrong way to wear it. The simple hat can make any look complete.
These cute hats made it big in 60’s and 70’s fashion in the U.S and European popular fashion. Just putting on these hats made any lady look like the girl next door or as if they just came from a stroll on the Parisian streets.
Not only can the hat make a girl look cute and innocent, the beret can also make an outfit look more dramatic and put-together. It can add a pop of color to a plain ensemble of clothes.
9. Plaid
Plaid was extremely popular back in the 90’s. It was popular in grunge fashion, as well as in the mainstream fashion world. When I think about plaid outfits in the past, the first ones that come to my mind are the plaid blazers and skirts Dionne and Cher wore in the first scene of the movie. Honestly, they’re so iconic. Here is a picture of them if you do not know:
Plaid is still seen in the outfits we wear as button up shirts and scarves. However, other plaid elements of fashion are coming back! Skirts, jackets, shoes, headbands. Plaid can add even a little color to your look, unless you’re like Cher from “Clueless” who enjoys wearing yellow plaid to school. Then it’s just go big or go home.
8. Loose/Wide Legged Pants
Move over, skinny jeans that are suffocating and hard to breathe in. It’s time that loose jeans came back into trendy fashion. I’m not talking about those loose pants that sag. I am talking about fitting jeans that give your legs freedom! They fit the waist perfectly and get wider as you move towards the ankles.
It’s time we treat our legs right. Skinny jeans can actually be health! People have gone to the hospital because of wearing them. Though the wide legged pants do not show off our figure much, it adds shape to your outfit and can look nice when paired with the right set of clothing. It’s better to be safe than sorry. Be careful with what you wear, stylistas!
7. Patterns on Patterns
The 80’s was all about all things bold! Perms and bold makeup were frequently seen, but it was the outfits that stood out the most. What really comes to my mind to me are the characters in a classic 80’s movie called “Pretty in Pink” starring Molly Ringwald. In the movie, Andie and Duckie would be seen wearing lots of patterned clothing. I am not exaggerating, by the way.
People are bringing the pattern on pattern look back today! It’s a great way to stand out from the crowd and start a conversation. Also, it’s nice to pop out when everyone else is wearing basic, plain clothing. It is unique, just like you!
6. Neon Colors
Speaking of being bold, the 80’s was a time when neon colored head-to-toe outfits were in style. No person could go without something neon in their wardrobe.
There are still plenty of clothing that are sold today that are bright and colorful. I think it’s time we bring in more neon clothing and accessories to our outfits. Even neon shoes or bags or jewelry would be just fine and add a much-needed pop of color. Our days can be a little bit better and brighter with a splash of color.
5. Polo Shirts
If you’re someone who loves to look clean cut, you’re definitely going to love what I am about to tell you.
Preppy schoolkid clothing is also making a comeback this year.
It’s been in existence for what feels like forever! I remember wearing these shirts most of the time when I was little and for picture day at school. Now that have years have passed, I definitely understand why people would love it so much.
It’s a great way to make your outfit look a bit sophisticated. Also, if you are a lazy person in the morning like me who always running late, just putting this shirt on will easily make it look as if you put effort into your clothing. It will make anything look fancy. I think it’s basically a lifesaver for getting ready if you’re lazy or want to put zero effort to looking good. You will thank me later.
4. Small, Thin Framed Glasses
Last year we were all about thick frames. The thicker or bigger the glasses were, the better. I, too, even jumped on this bandwagon and bought some thick frames a couple months back.
Well, the fashion world is all about making changes. We once thought that futuristic fashion was going to be trendy. However, vintage looking clothing became popular not too long ago. Fashion just loves to take opposite turns and change our fashion game completely.
Small, thin frames were very popular in the 90’s and are making a return to popular fashion. You must be shocked but they are actually really nice. Depending on the style, it can look great when working in a professional environment since they don’t catch too much attention. It’s a great subtle accessory and can make you look sophisticated in and outside the workplace.
Also, if you wear some small framed glasses, you can easily go from a regular person to a badass! It makes you look much more confident when roaming the streets, too. There are plenty of other fun colors and styles of small frames to choose from. Honestly, the choices are endless and look really good! These glasses can make you look ready to conquer the world and very intimidating just like Keanu Reeves “The Matrix”.
3. Track Pants
These are not like Adidas soccer pants or sweatpants, which are ultimate go-to clothing items of mine for those chill days. I am talking about wide-legged, loose pants with no elastic garter sewn in the ankle area. I’m not surprised that these are coming back in style since people are starting to wear loose pants again.
These pants are perfect for people who are very outgoing when it comes to style! It’s a very simple clothing item, but with so many colors to choose from, you can easily be the talk of the town. You could make people do a double take when walking. Not to mention, it is also very comfortable to wear since the fabric is very smooth and flowy.
2. Scrunchies
Scrunchies were extremely popular back in the 80’s and 90’s! You could see them on the hair of what seemed like almost every girl on shows such as “Full House”, “Saved by the Bell”, and “Boy Meets World”. I also wore a ton of scrunchies when I was a little girl. Definitely not joking.
Now is the time to take your old scrunchies out (or buy some new ones) and wear it. Scrunchies have been popping up in popular clothing stores such as Forever 21 and ASOS the past year or two. However, I believe that more people will be sporting these fun hair ties this year! It can make you look playful and easygoing. Also, it can definitely make a person look cute and look like a doll. If you want to look less serious when going out in the town, just tie your hair up with one of these babies and you’re good to go.
1. Fanny Packs
I personally am not into fanny packs, but I don’t decide what is cool and what isn’t. Yes, these things are back in style and considered trendy.
Fanny packs are great if you don’t like carrying a heavy bag on your shoulder or arm. There are many times I hate carrying around what seems like a 10 pound dumbbell around. It can make my shoulder or arm feel sore afterwards. You will feel a tad bit lighter with a fanny pack. I can guarantee it.
If you want to carry around less stuff everyday, then this is the accessory for you. It forces you to carry only your necessities! Now that I think about it, I should give this accessory a try one of these days.
